Organic NPK Fertilizer

Organic NPK Fertilizer is a mix of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), which are the three most important macronutrients for plants.

Organic NPK Fertilizer Types

There are three types of organic NPK fertilizer: plant-based, manure-based, and a mix, or blend, of both plants and manure. As such, each organic fertilizer will contain different macro and micronutrients depending on the materials used to make it. Common materials used in the making of organic NPK fertilizer are animal waste - in the form of manure - and composted seaweed, leaves, fruits, or vegetables. Other materials sometimes found in organic fertilisers are blood meal, bone meal, peat, rock phosphate, used coffee grounds, and fish emulsion (decomposed ground-up fish).

The amount and ratio of NPK nutrients required by a particular plant depends on the species and the period of the growth cycle the plant is currently going through. Therefore, organic NPK fertilizers will always state the NPK ratio present in the mix. If you are unfamiliar with the NPK ratio you can learn more about what it means here on the BAC blog

Organic fertilizers are also available in liquid form. Liquid fertilizers contain a mix of the three essential macronutrients, micronutrients, and beneficial microorganisms derived from the same ingredients listed above.

Organic NPK Fertilizer Application and Benefits

Organic NPK Fertilizer is applied directly to the soil. Unlike artificial fertilizer made from synthetic ingredients, organic fertilizer improves the long-term quality of the soil by adding organic matter that is high in nutrients. These nutrients are broken down very slowly, gradually becoming available to the plants in the soil. Of course, when applied as a liquid, the process of breaking down and absorbing the nutrients is somewhat faster.

In comparison, artificial fertilizers release an abundance of nutrients into the soil extremely quickly and in a form that can be immediately absorbed by the plant. This can be beneficial for plants that require a quick boost at a particular stage of development, such as during the blooming phase, but can also result in nutrient leaking, whereby nutrients runoff into the soil, unused by the plant, and, as well as being a waste, can cause damage to the environment.

Slow-acting organic NPK fertilizer provides holistic, ongoing benefits to plants. Studies have found that organic fertilizers, in addition to building healthy soils, improve plants’ growth, yield, and the nutritional content of their fruit. The benefits of organic fertilizer are therefore multifaceted and long-term.

Applying organic NPK fertilizer to the soil occurs in several ways. Composts can be dug into the soil before planting, while ingredients such as bone meal and rock phosphate can either be mixed into the soil or sprinkled on the soil’s surface. Fertilizer that is applied directly to the surface of the soil will be gradually worked into the ground by the rain and watering.
