Hydrangea Fertilizer

Hydrangeas are deciduous shrubs deriving from Asia and the Americas. Today they are a common feature in many gardens around the world, popular for their exuberant flower heads that come in a multitude of shapes and colours. To successfully grow hydrangeas in your own garden, you will want to consider using a hydrangea fertilizer to ensure yours produces a stunning array of flowers as well as strong roots and abundant foliage.

Hydrangea fertilizer should not be used too often as hydrangeas are hardy plants that do not require a lot of extra attention. However, providing some support to newly planted hydrangeas and to hydrangeas on the verge of blooming can be beneficial. A fertilizer designed specifically for hydrangeas will not be necessary. Instead, match the fertilizer to the specific needs of the plant, based on the growth stage it has reached.

Some gardeners recommend mulching hydrangeas with leaf mulch, manure, or compost rather than fertilizing them. For best results, do both. Mulching helps to build overall soil fertility providing nutrients over the long term, while a good fertilizer can provide the nutrients a plant needs immediately.

Hydrangea Fertilizer for New Plants

Hydrangea fertilizer for newly planted hydrangeas should assist the plant with developing roots and growing shoots and leaves. For this, nitrogen is vitally important. Nitrogen fuels several key functions in the biology of plants. In particular, it supports photosynthesis and the creation of amino acids.

Using a nitrogen-rich hydrangea fertilizer during the early stages of the plant’s life will help it to establish itself and grow much-needed foliage. Once the hydrangea is developed it will need less fertilization and only at very specific points, namely, just before the blooming period.

Hydrangea Fertilizer for Established Plants

Fully grown hydrangeas normally require fertilization in just two situations: in the event of nutrient deficiency and just before the plant blooms. To resolve nutrient deficiencies choose a fertilizer with the essential plant nutrients that are missing based on the physical indicators shown by the plant. To stimulate a hydrangea in bloom, choose a fertilizer high in phosphorus and potassium.

Phosphorus and potassium both play an important role during the blooming phase. Phosphorus is essential for transferring energy around the plant that is used for developing roots and growing flowers. Potassium, as well as being required for photosynthesis, also regulates metabolic functions that are involved in fruit and seed development.

It is worth noting, however, that a high phosphorous fertilizer is rarely necessary. It all depends on the quality of the soil and the amount of phosphorus already present within it. In general, hydrangeas will produce excellent blooms using a well-balanced fertilizer that contains as much phosphorus as it does nitrogen and potassium.
